What is Systema? Systema is an ancient Russian form of martial arts. Russian masters recognized combat as a state of chaos carrying with it an infinite number of challenges and opportunities. The most effective way to prepare a warrior to survive was to cultivate their adaptability, creativity, and autonomy. Since there was no way to predict how an enemy might attack, there could be no one technique or single form that could guarantee survival.
Systema is dedicated to leading the individual student to their own best resolution of fear and the problem of violence. Systema does not advocate rigid structures or imitation, nor rote memorization. It teaches a clear, logical, step-by-step curriculum of essential principles of structure and movement and places students in situations that allow them to find individual solutions that suit their natures and capacities. Through open-minded study, we are committed to creating an art that adapts to the changing needs of the student and the world around them, free of ego or hierarchy.
The approach to training is based upon the principles of non-aggression and self-discovery. The Russian concept of, "Poznai Sebia", which translates as, "Know Yourself" is a significant focus within our training. What does it really mean to know yourself? It is beyond knowing our strengths and weaknesses and seeing the full extent of our limitations - to see how proud and weak we really are. Training is designed to put every student into the best possible setting for him/her to realize as much about themselves as they are able to handle at any given moment. Our approach allows us to gain the true strength of spirit that comes from humility and clarity in seeing the purposes of our life.
